Near brushes with celebrity

THE BEAUTY of New York Fashion Week is that it allows the press to get up close and personal with top-flight celebs -- there's no velvet rope and often no publicists or entourage in tow. That's also the beast of it -- when camera-worthy stars step into the tents, they're immediately overrun by overzealous (although, in our case, only appropriately zealous) reporters, and it's chaos.
… At a couple of shows, the security guards took the extra precaution of positioning an extendible barrier in front of the celebrity cavalcade -- you could look at but you couldn't touch Anne Hathaway, Chloe Sevigny and Ashley Olsen at Miss Sixty, or the bevy of interchangeable blondes at MaxAzria.
The barrier "keeps a little bit of manageability, a little bit of breathing space," says Fern Mallis, senior vice president of Fashion Week producer IMG Fashion.
The crush wasn't enough to scare off Eliza Dushku, who used to battle much worse on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "I'm a Bostonian," says Dushku, looking ever-so-proper in a shell pink shirtdress with matching pumps and purse at Ports 1961. "I can push back."
