It really depends on the writer and the quality of his work. Sometimes I feel I "owe" it to the writer to stretch the line as much as I can before giving up.

Palahniuk is an example. I used to read him religiously. Fight Club, Survivor, Invisible Monters, and Choke all rank right up there for me. He really lost me after that with Diary and Lullaby. He really lost something between Choke and Lullaby. It had no edge to it, no real mystery, no reason for me to care about any of the characters.
