You are right on the mark, Tash. There are "attention wh*res" out there like Paris Hilton who use the media to further their pathetic careers because they know that bad news sells better than good news; they know being outrageous will give them publicity. And the tabloid media sucks it up because it sells more garbage. But Eliza usually only does publicity to promote projects or causes she's involved with, without any self-aggrandizement and with very good taste and decorum.
I don't mind seeing the occasional candid shot of Eliza, but I do feel sad for how much private life she must give up with papparazzi cameras intruding on her and anyone who comes into her life. In the la-la land of Hollywood, Eliza handles her career and her life with much tact, dignity and just plain COOL as anyone I've ever seen.
