Default 'Pirates' Set to Break DVD Sales Record

The second 'Pirates' movie sells nearly five million copies on its first day of release.
'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' continues to add to its bountiful booty! Already the No. 1 movie at the box office this year -- with $421 million in ticket sales -- the successful sequel is now on track to become the No. 1 live-action DVD of all time!

The action-adventure film, starring JOHNNY DEPP, KEIRA KNIGHTLEY and ORLANDO BLOOM, was released Tuesday on DVD and sold nearly five million copies in its first day, according to BOB CHAPEK, president of Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment.

"We could not be more thrilled with the incredible success of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest,'" says Chapek.

What's more, if strong sales continue on 'Pirates,' Buena Vista Worldwide Home Entertainment could potentially finish out the year with the top three DVD releases of 2006 with 'Pirates,' 'Cars' and 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.'

'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' is available as both a deluxe two-disc Special Edition DVD and as a single-disc DVD.

The highly anticipated third installment of the popular franchise will sail into theaters next summer.

That's a lot of DVD's! I was at this electronics store a couple of days after they had released the DVD here. The store is located pretty far away from any of the bigger cities, yet they had sold out all their copies (250) in less than 2 days, and at least 10 people in the line were asking for it. 250 copies is a lot, considering Norway has a population of 4.6 million and the location of the store.
