Ghost of a chance

Who you gonna call? Well, CBS has dialed up the North Royalton paranormal investigator known as Mary Ann. The No. 1 network has given the green light to a pilot episode for a drama series starring Jennifer Love Hewitt as a character based on the ghost-hunting Mary Ann.

"I think they're going after a younger audience," Mary Ann said during a telephone interview. "I'm really flattered by the choice of actresses, but you've got to automatically knock about 30 years off my age to get to Jennifer Love Hewitt. And as far as looks are concerned, let me tell you, not on my best day would I be confused with Jennifer Love Hewitt."

Produced by Touchstone Television and tentatively titled "The Ghost Whisperer," the pilot introduces Hewitt's character as a ghostbuster and antiques dealer married to a paramedic. The success of NBC's "Medium," with Patricia Arquette as psychic Allison DuBois, has the networks making a spirited attempt to find shows based on paranormal investigators.

You don't need a psychic to learn the fate of "The Ghost Whisperer." We'll find out if this pilot goes to series when CBS announces its fall lineup on May 18. But if you want that psychic, remember that James Van Praagh is one of the show's creators.

"There's no question that this is all happening because of 'Medium,' " Mary Ann said. "Everybody out there is looking for the next thing in this area. This all came about because of my friendship with James Van Praagh. I've known James for a very long time, and he asked me if I'd be interested in this. But James is a medium, like Allison DuBois. I'm a paranormal investigator."

What's the difference?

"James communicates with spirits who have crossed over," Mary Ann said. "I see spirits who are earthbound. He can't see what I see. I can't see what he sees."
