Hilary Duff

Once or twice a year a new star bursts on the scene, streaking across the sky in a blaze of magazine covers and clever cross-promotion, becoming forever part of our cultural consciousness. It is happening right now with Hilary Duff, the sweet 16-year-old star of "A Cinderella Story."

If you are saying "Who?" you obviously were not watching a few years ago when Duff launched the Disney Channel television show "Lizzie McGuire" to the top of its time slot. And you did not catch the second wave of publicity surrounding Duff's two films last year, "Agent Cody Banks" and "The Lizzie McGuire Movie." As if that were not enough, the pretty Texan also has sold millions of pop-rock albums, and her music videos are on MTV.

So for the starlet who was first discovered performing ballet as a little girl, the lead role in "A Cinderella Story" is a natural. A comical modern retelling of the classic fairy tale, "A Cinderella Story" is a high school romance that casts Duff as a mousy teenager with a domineering stepmother played by Jennifer Coolidge.

Q: Are you a big fan of the "Cinderella" fairy tale?

A: Definitely. When I was growing up, "Cinderella" was my favorite fairy tale. Every little girl wants that to happen to her.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Did you like how this movie shows a different type of Cinderella?

A: That's what I love about it, is that it shows the girl being independent. In all the other Cinderella stories she kind of sat around and waited for things to fall into place. In this one, even though she's not the most popular girl in school, she's still a go-getter and she sets goals for herself.

Q: Jennifer Coolidge is very funny as your stepmom in the film. Was it hard to keep a straight face when she improvised her lines?

A: Not just me. Everyone would just bust out laughing. I loved her, but it was hard because it was like, "Hilary, you have to get it together!" All of the stuff she said was never written. She just made it all up. I was thinking, "How does she come up with this kind of stuff?" She's so creative. She's great.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Do you feel more like yourself when you act or when you sing onstage?

A: I'm not sure. Definitely when I'm onstage, I'm a different person and I feel more in touch with myself and who I want to be. It's definitely a little more hardcore than the movies I do or how I dress on a daily basis. When I'm singing, I am putting on a persona. I'm not, like, out there and crazy on a day-to-day basis. But that's me, that's what I feel inside and what I feel most connected with. It's kind of fun and I can let loose. They're all me, different personalities.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: So which is your true passion, acting or singing?

A: Definitely singing. When you're onstage and you have a sold-out venue of 15,000 people, and they know every single word to your song and are holding up gigantic signs and freaking out, the support and energy you get from them, it's like instant gratification. It's such a cool feeling to be in a different city every night. It's great. The singing definitely gives you more energy. But it's also a very rewarding feeling when you've finished a movie.

Q: Is it hard to meet people because you are a celebrity?

A: I think so, yeah. It's so hard for me. Even though I'm 16, I don't feel like 16 most of the time. But also, I work so much and I'm always out of town, so where am I supposed to meet somebody if it's not in the business? How am I supposed to meet anybody normal? I don't go to a high school. And if I do meet someone normal, then everyone starts talking about it, if it's right or wrong. So there are so many different opinions involved.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: So where would you find a boyfriend?

A: Right now, I don't. I think my boyfriend is my work and my car, and that's it for now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What kind of car is it?

A: I drive a Range Rover.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Stick shift?

A: Oh, are you kidding me? It's an automatic. I would have that thing burned out by now if it was a stick shift!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: You seem to be incredibly busy right now. How do you feel about your workload?

A: I'm happy. I feel like the luckiest person in the world. I get to do so much stuff and I get to do what I love. Sometimes I wish I could get a day off when I don't have to make decisions, but it's about sacrifice, and I get so much other good stuff in return.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What is the weirdest place you have been recognized by a fan?

A: I was sitting on a plane one time coming back from New York and there was this couple. They wrote me a note. They were 40 years old and they just got married and they said, "We really love listening to your music in the car." That's really cool, so that's nice. I think that a big percentage of my fan base is very young, but I'll walk down the street and adults, older teenagers, they're all so supportive.
