I can't recall since it's been so long since I've been a n00b... not sure if you have to have a certain amount of posts first... but to use a custom avatar, go to that screen where you input the URL... then hit SET URL. Right after that you scroll to top of the same page and you'll see your new avatar if it loaded correctly. Are you seeing the image at this point?
Then hit SELECT THIS AVATAR to set it. You should see it in your profile screen now. But you have to then hit the UPDATE PROFILE on that page to set it.
