Thumbs up

I daresay you've either made or missed your class and can post them now.

Every now and then, I have a dream that makes sense even after I wake up, and this one was undoubtedly based on an episode of Star Trek, or possibly a book I read, either of which I experienced maybe 15-20 years ago. It might also have come partially from a Discover article I read around then too. And there's one final element that undoubtedly came from a book I was reading at the time I had this dream.

The human race had created a starship which functioned on the ability to destroy space in front of it and create space behind it, which therefore allowed the ship to move inertia-lessly. I was aboard this ship on its maiden flight/shakedown cuise, though I forget exactly what my capacity was - probably as a computer technician, since I did have a few flashes from my time in the navy - but I was watching out the window as we were going through the solar system, and if I'd had a real job, I would've been doing that instead.

Right about the time we were passing Jupiter and Saturn, it occurred to me that these two planets weren't supposed to be so big so close - that is, if you're at one of them, the other one is a dot in the sky, and here they both were, easily visible. At first I thought this was some sort of gravitational-lensing effect, and therefore just an optical illusion. But we were staying there for a bit, and whichever planet we were NOT near wouldn't go away. A bad sign!

I then realized (presumably by going to the CIC and checking the sensor logs, but my dream skipped that part) that the ship was creating something like a "hole" in space that it was sitting in, and as we'd moved, we had created a tear that had damaged the "fabric" of space. (Space is made up of a bunch of tiny Planck-length rings, in case you didn't know.)

Realizing this meant the drive was going to wind up destroying Earth eventually, I made my way to the Captain's quarters to tell him we had to stop using the drive before we started on the next leg of our journey, to another star, which would wind up screwing up a lot more than just the solar system.

Instead of the CO being one of my actual CO's, it was, you guessed it, Lacey. And she was, you guessed it, not willing to listen to me. In fact, because I was so intent on trying to convince her to stop the second leg of the journey, and she was so intent on carrying out her mission, our whole relationship was getting put in jeopardy. She was starting to regret having me there. (So I guess she had invited me to be there, and perhaps my role was as a journalist covering such a historic occasion. No Mr. B this time, though, so I'm not sure.)

Seeing I couldn't get anywhere with her myself, because what am I but not even worth her notice, I realize I have to find someone else to convince, and let HIM convince her. The next person I see is one of my Lieutenants, Mr. Ross. (It took a few days for me to figure out that was who I'd dreamed of, and no, this has nothing to do with Ross McCall, whom I don't even know what he looks like. Ross was this guy's last name.) I'm not sure I had ever worked for Mr. Ross while I was on the boat, but he was in charge of the department I was SUPPOSED to have been in when I got there. A lot of that stuff is fuzzy now. I don't recall even liking the guy. But anyway, I'm standing in front of Mr. Ross now and I tell him that the ship is tearing space and we have to stop the test, and I show him my evidence, that Saturn and Jupiter are close to each other.

Mr. Ross doesn't believe me either, so I scour the ship for SOMEONE to believe me, but unfortunately I woke up before I could save the world.

It's a shame, but when the world gets ripped to pieces by flying through a rip in space, you only have Lacey to blame for treating me like a nobody.
